Full-Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum CBD: What’s The Difference?

Choosing the right CBD that will work for you can seem complicated as people are often confused about the terms full spectrum CBD and also broad spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum and broad spectrum extracts are usually derived from the hemp plant and will both provide you with the benefits of CBD, such as help with pain, stress, and ailments. So what’s the difference between the two and is one better than the other?

What is full-spectrum CBD?

As the name suggests, full spectrum contains everything in the hemp plant. In addition to CBD, you will also find flavonoids (these are the fatty acids found in hemp), terpenes, and other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN, and trace amounts of THC. Full-spectrum CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC, which isn’t enough to get you high and also makes it legal across the US.

Full-spectrum CBD also contains essential minerals, vitamins, proteins and fibers. Because full-spectrum CBD has a range of other naturally occurring elements, it can have an “entourage effect” where the cannabinoids and terpenes work together to deliver a range of therapeutic benefits.

What is broad spectrum CBD?

Broad spectrum CBD products also contain a variety of cannabinoids and terpenes but no THC (0%). Broad spectrum products undergo additional processing to isolate and remove trace amounts of THC while preserving the other natural elements.

Should I choose full-spectrum or broad spectrum CBD?

There’s often a misunderstanding that broad spectrum CBD is inferior to full-spectrum CBD, however, that isn’t the case. Both extracts contain the different cannabinoids and terpenes that are distinct to cannabis and will promote a sense of well-being without the high.

Broad spectrum CBD is recommended if:

  • You can’t have any THC in your system due to work policies. Although full-spectrum only contains 0.3% THC, this trace amount can still show up in sensitive drug tests.
  • You’re very sensitive to THC.
  • You’re new to CBD and hesitant to consume THC.
